Commercial refrigerator frosting: how to defrost safely

Frost may come from a door left open, a leaking gasket, blocked airflow or a failed defrost heater, sensor, timer or controller. Removing ice does not fix the underlying cause.

Applies to

Upright, glass-door, worktop and freezer cabinets with frost or ice buildup.

Safe checks

Check door closure, gasket gaps, blocked air outlets and photograph the frost pattern.

Stop the equipment

Stop if ice reaches fans, wiring is wet, there is burning smell or repeated tripping.

Request service

Call when frost returns quickly, the fan is blocked or the cabinet cannot reach temperature after safe defrosting.

Safe defrosting

Protect the food

Move stock to suitable cold storage before the cabinet warms.

Disconnect power

Follow the equipment manual and isolate power before accessible cleaning.

Never chip ice

Sharp tools can puncture the evaporator or refrigerant tubing.

Dry before restart

Remove meltwater and ensure electrical areas are dry before restoring operation.

Common questions

Can I use a knife to remove ice?

No. It can puncture tubing or damage the evaporator.

Why does frost return?

Door leakage, airflow restriction or a failed defrost component may still be present.

What should I photograph?

Take the full cabinet, frost pattern, door gasket, controller and nameplate.
